Why Use a 50% Grey Screen?

Check Uniformity

Grey is the hardest color for a monitor to display evenly. It instantly reveals clouding, vignetting (dark corners), and uneven brightness across the panel.

Dirty Screen Effect (DSE)

If your screen looks like it has faint vertical bands or "dirty" spots when watching sports or gaming, use this grey screen to confirm DSE issues.

Color Tint / White Balance

A perfect grey should look neutral. If it looks pink, green, or blue, your monitor's white balance might be off. This is a quick way to check calibration.

Image Retention (Burn-in)

For OLED and Plasma screens, a uniform grey field helps you spot faint ghost images or "burn-in" from static UI elements.

How to Test Screen Uniformity?

  1. Launch Fullscreen: Click the button above to fill your screen with 50% Grey.
  2. Scan for Dark Spots: Look for areas that are darker than others, especially in the corners.
  3. Check for Tints: Does the grey look neutral, or does it have a color cast?
  4. Exit: Click anywhere or press ESC to return.

Technical Details: Middle Grey

  • Hex Code: #808080 This corresponds to RGB (128, 128, 128), which is mathematically halfway between pure black (0) and pure white (255).
  • Gamma Correction Note that due to gamma correction (usually 2.2), 50% signal strength does not mean 50% light output (luminance). It appears as "middle grey" to the human eye.

Grey Screen FAQs

Is it normal for my screen to look uneven on grey?

To some extent, yes. Most consumer LCD/LED monitors have slight uniformity issues. However, severe clouding or distinct bands (DSE) are considered defects.

Can this fix burn-in?

This is primarily a diagnostic tool. To fix image retention, you usually need a rapidly flashing color pattern (noise) rather than a static grey image.
